Course Description: The emphasis of this class is on the Ohio Graduation Test (O.G.T.). The major areas of study will include American History, People in Societies, Geography, Economics, Government, Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities, and basic study and testing skills. Also, students will examine the American political system and the impact of political events on the United States government through current events, controversial issues, and political debates.

Grades: The grading scale is determined by the Kenton City School Board and can be found in the student handbook.
99-100 = A+ 73-77 = C
93-98 = A 70-72 = C-
90-92 = A- 68-69 = D+
88-89 = B+ 63-67 = D

80-82 = B- 00-59 = F
78-79 = C+
Classroom Rules: There are two rights guaranteed in my classroom: each student’s right to learn and my right to teach without interference. The following rules are established to assure these rights. These rules may be adjusted by the teacher to assure a proper classroom atmosphere.
A. BE ON TIME (NOTE: KHS Tardy Policy)
B. BE PREPARED
1. Always need book, pencil/pen, paper, and folder
C. BE RESPECTFUL
1. Be kind and considerate to all others in the classroom. Treat others like you want to be treated. If you respect your peers, they will respect you.
2. DO NOT leave your seat during class to sharpen pencil or throw away trash, etc.
3. REMINDER: No coats, backpacks, candy, food, beverages, I-Pods or cell phones in the room.
4. No foul language will be tolerated from students
5. Follow the rules in the student handbook
Consequences: 1. Teacher Warning
2. Detention
3. Call parent/guardian
4. Refer to Mr. Abbott
Absences: YOU are responsible for showing me your absence excuse and asking for any missed assignments, NOT ME. If you are absent on a test day, a makeup day must be discussed with me.
Seating: I will give you an assigned seat and you must sit in it.

BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES
Mr. Best
Course Description: Behavioral Science is a course that consists of a semester each of Sociology and Psychology. Sociology is the study of human society and social behavior. This course places an emphasis upon the impact that group behavior and learning have on each individual. Some specific areas of study will include the family, peer groups, social institutions, social problems, and crime and their impact on society. Psychology is the study of mental processes and human behavior. Some areas of study will be why individuals behave the way they do, individual learning styles, personality development, studying parts of the brain and how it works, intelligence, individual perception of the environment, psychological disorders, and careers in psychology. In both classes, students will participate in projects, which will provide them with the opportunity to conduct research and to utilize the results of this research in considering solutions to current social problems. Also, grades will be based on tests, quizzes, homework, and class participation.

WORLD STUDIES

Course Description: This course is designed to give students a better understanding of the political, social, and economic aspects of world history, from the Age of Enlightenment to the War on Terror. There will also be an emphasis on preparing students to pass the Ohio Graduation Test in Social Studies.
