Ohio Senate Bill 29 (SB29), effective October 24, 2024, enhances student data privacy by establishing stricter regulations on how schools and third-party technology providers handle educational records. Under this law, student data remains the property of the school district, and any misuse of this information for commercial purposes is prohibited. The bill also requires schools to notify parents about technology contracts that impact student data and limits the monitoring of school-issued devices to specific circumstances, with parental notification required in some cases.
As part of the district’s compliance with SB29, a list of all websites and applications used for educational purposes will be provided to parents and guardians. This list will include any third-party platforms that collect or process student data, ensuring transparency in how student information is handled. Each approved website or app must adhere to SB29’s requirements, which prohibit the use of student data for commercial gain and mandate strong privacy protections. By maintaining this list, the district ensures that all technology used in the classroom aligns with state law and prioritizes student privacy and security. The list will be published before August 1st, 2025.
